Brand rank is the 1-based position of your domain in an AI engine's citation list when your domain appears.
If Perplexity answers a query with five sources and yours is the second one listed, your brand rank for that run is 2. If you're not cited, brand rank is null (we don't synthesize a worst-case number — absence is its own signal).
Why rank matters within citations
Not all citations are equal:
- Rank 1–2 — top-of-list citations get the most attention and the most clicks
- Rank 3–4 — visible but less likely to be clicked
- Rank 5+ — often hidden behind "see all sources" expansions
The composite Visibility Score weights citation rank into the final number — being cited 100% of the time at rank 5 is worth less than being cited 50% of the time at rank 1.
Improving brand rank
- Be the primary source on the topic — link to your own primary research where possible
- Use clean, semantically structured pages (LLMs preferentially cite well-structured sources)
- Be recent — most AI engines prefer fresh content on time-sensitive queries
- Have a clean domain reputation — link to good neighborhoods, get linked from good neighborhoods
